Relevant events

The first public performance was held in the Portuguese Geographic Society on 31 of March of 1990. Many other performances followed, with the total now surpassing the figure of 130 in own shows or in joint shows with other groups, in Portugal and in other countries. EKVAT was present at the 7th. International Seminar of Indo-Portuguese History in Angra do Heroismo (Azores) and held performances embedded in the cultural activities of EXPO 98, of LISBON EUROPEAN CAPITAL of CULTURE, and in LONDON at the invitation of the Goan Musical Society. 

The concert tour to INDIA, in 1999, starting in BOMBAY, passing through DAMAN and ending in GOA, where the group was received with special affection, was for EKVAT the recognition of its efforts of spreading the sounds and dances of their native land through the diaspora.

More recently, in 2007, some of the more important performances were held at the Sanjoaninas Festival at the Terceira Island (Azores), in the Casa da Musica (Oporto), on TVI (Independent TV: Gala show “7 Wonders” of Filipe La Féria) and in WASHINGTON D.C at the invitation of the Smithsonian Institution within the scope of the exhibition “Encompassing the Globe: Portugal and the World in the 16th and 17th Centuries”.


 In 2008, workshops and performances were held in the Museum do Oriente (Orient Museum, Lisbon), on RTP (Portuguese Radio and Television: Gala “Dance with Me”), in Sesimbra and Lagos (Algarve), among several others.


 In 2009 EKVAT completed 20 years of its foundation. This anniversary is being celebrated in 2009/2010 with various cultural activities including a show “Winds of Tradition” held on 30th May 2009 in the Auditorium of the Orient Museum in Lisbon. The celebrations will close with a grand Gala Show in the Camões Theater, in Lisbon, on 6th November 2010. For more details of these events select the option “EKVAT 20 years” on the horizontal bar.
